At the heart of my photography practice is an enduring love of the natural world and a passion for capturing its beauty. Passion rooted in a lifelong love of nature and a desire to preserve moments and experiences. Photography is both art and language. It is how I most naturally communicate what I see and experience. When words fall short, images can clarify meaning with realism and expressionism. With a camera and editing software, there’s virtually no limit to what can be created or conveyed in a photograph.

The camera immerses me in the scene, whether it’s the interplay of light and shadow, stunning landscapes or seascapes, or even the small and subtle elements in nature so often missed. It repeatedly shows me that there is wonder in the most ordinary of things, if I slow down enough and pay attention.

Photography is not limited to simply capturing what is seen. I aim to create photographs that evoke awe of nature’s beauty and encourage the viewer to feel a connection to the natural world. Ultimately, my goal is to make photos that are both contemplative and beautiful—meaningful— photography that encourages the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the world.

Making photos is always an act of both discovery and expression for me. Each image attempts to distill a scene down—be it a landscape or a small scene such as in macro photography—into an artistic representation. I strive to honor the beauty in the world in my work while also bringing something of myself to each frame. What matters most to me is the art of photography - not the business of it.

At its foundation, my approach to photography is rooted in curiosity and observation. I am drawn to the textures, shapes, colors, light, and patterns. I am also interested in understanding and reflecting the atmosphere of a place. It is my intention for my photographic work to reflect that we are not separate from nature. Nature, in all her wildness and beauty, strikes a chord in us that is both ancient and immediate. My photography is forever drawn to expressing that connection. ~Susan

It is my intention and hope that my studio in Murray Hill Galleries will be a space for community, connection, and creative exchange. I believe in the power of art to connect us to one another and to the world around us. I hope my photographic work inspires conversation and curiosity, and encourages visitors to the gallery to investigate their own creativity. I lived most of my life not seeing myself as a creative person, but I have come to believe everyone is creative—whether we recognize it or not.
